about

Metamaterials: miniature composites comprising to create a larger effect. Every small piece plays an integral role in something much bigger. Just like every ingredient in a dish, every cog in a machine, every element in a tune, every coded hint and message in the minutiae of a Vorso EP.

Metamaterial: The latest hyper-detailed, sonically adventurous excursion from one of the bass music's most exciting leftfield experimenters to emerge in recent years. His second EP-length trip for Inspected (sense-melting singles such as 'Needle VIP', 'Archipelago' and 'Strange Attractor' notwithstanding) once again he plunges us deep into a glitch tsunami where harmonic waves crash down on you and turbine bass currents pull you in three directions at once.
Like the elements of each individual track, the entire EP fits in with the broader narrative of his other releases. Part of a much wider body of work he's been developing - not just on Inspected but also Pilot, Flexout, Viper and Music Squad - there are recurring themes, ideas and running references if you dig deep enough under the frequency bonnet.
There are also many tales behind the frequency bonnet. How a Bristol brunch with fellow boundary-less electronic luminary Opiuo led to the jittering, harmonic wriggles of 'Photonics'. How 'Voltage' was inspired by the advice of mastering engineer DKS, its distortion created through blood, sweat and heavy handed mic preamp abuse. How the jauntier, light-hearted 'Liquid Crystals' was literally born of a thoughtless ditty the young artist found himself whistling the day after his debut DJ set earlier this year.

It's not all coffee and ditties, of course; amid the six tracks are premiership 21st century club bangers. Clever, unpredictable, impossible to classify or categorise; the blurry disco, alien symphonics and wet fart bassline orchestra of 'Vagabond', the lava-like salvo and cut throat gestures of opener 'Wannabe' and the solemn technoid marching chowder of the finale 'Reaching For The Surface', the list of Vorso's dexterous designs goes on. And will do so at an increased velocity now he's completed his studies; not only has he dropped this new EP on us, but he's dropped his dissertation on dissertation on how to create instruments that sense emotion to his tutors and there's nothing holding him back from the studio.
